20 November 2014

A true celebration of the children´s right for participation appeared to be this year´s event to mark the 25th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, by the Office of the Cyprus Commissioner for Children´s Rights. It took place on the 20th November 2014, in the historic venue of Famagusta Gate in Nicosia. The Minister of Education and Culture read the speech of the President of the Republic.

Under the title “Whatever hurts it (the child), it hurts us”, the event dealt with the sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children, within the framework of the ongoing campaign of “One in Five” of the Council of Europe, promoted in Cyprus by the Commissioner for Children´s Rights. The highlight of the event was the participation of 3 different age-groups of children (kindergarten, primary school and high school students). The children had the opportunity to present to the audience their own unique message, regarding sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children, through dancing, singing a song they had themselves composed and through image theatre.
